Ideally, there would be some form of Permadeath to really engage people, but that’s neither here nor there at the moment. Bethesda tones things down for game balance or accessibility but when the realism is turned up as much as possible, it makes the game much more exciting in my opinion because all of a sudden the weapons and armor and abilities being used by the characters of these worlds actually do what they are supposed to do, so if you hope to survive, you have to truly become skilled and/or secure the best equipment available to you you have to learn to make the best decisions in the moment and really get gud at this whole iconic adventurer thing to actually survive. There’s a lot of mods that change up Skyrim to allow people to experience it a certain way, but my favorite way to experience Bethesda games is through brutal realism and immersion, which tends to go interesting places because applying these principles to fantasy or sci-if settings really drives home how dangerous and tense and thrilling it would be inside a simulation of Bethesda’s IP universes.
